We do need to feed the homeless because food has become under the control of mostly neo-corporate systems that will never recognize human rights, even the most basic as having places to go to the bathroom or eat. What we really need to do is to clamp down on the vicious cycle of lobbyist-driven consumerism, but short of that the next best thing is to redistribute the goods to those that have been pushed out of accepted society. You can also find so many other creative ways to reuse the over-produced by-products of packaging without throwing them away or recycling right away. It's only the elitist blind eye that dismisses everything in that category as trash. Do whatever you can to challenge the dominant system, but also stay balanced within yourself so others can follow your example. I do believe we are on the cusp of a reawakening, but this time we have to stay alert and open on all fronts to make sure we don't unravel along the path of unquestioning idealism that our parents did. As the old Muslim proverb suggests, "Believe and revel in the awe of Allah, delve into the great compassion, but still keep your camel tied up."
